The raffle gives every Jew, no matter what his financial means, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to merit a sefer Torah of his own
With the approach of Pesach, the holiday of our freedom, Yad L'Achim is holding a sefer Torah raffle whose proceeds will go to its life-saving efforts in rescuing Jewish women and children from Arab villages. This extraordinary sefer Torah, written especially for Yad L'Achim by a yarei Shamayim sofer, stands out in its beauty and hiddurim.
The winner will also receive funding for a hachnasas sefer Torah ceremony in the shul of his choice, complete with posters announcing the event and a joyous procession.
Response to the raffle, set for 13 Nisan/March 24, has been electric. Many people are hoping to realize a life-long dream of acquiring a sefer Torah and bringing it to their shul, in their merit and in the merit of their children and families. Others have contacted Yad L'Achim's offices to say that they are hoping to merit arranging a hachnasas sefer Torah as an eternal memorial for a loved one. Many shul gabbaim have signed up in the hope of winning a much-needed sefer Torah for their shul.
The raffle gives every Jew, no matter what his financial means, the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to obtain a sefer Torah of his own, Yad L'Achim officials note. The great merit of participating in such a rare raffle grants each person the opportunity to fulfill the positive commandment, incumbent upon every Jew, to write a sefer Torah for himself.
Yad L'Achim officials cited the Gemara in Menachos that extols the great merit of a person who writes a sefer Torah for himself. The Gemara adds that anyone who fulfills this mitzvah is regarded by the passuk as one who received the Torah at Har Sinai.
