Yad L’Achim Warns: Assimilation Poses Security Threat

A young Jewish convert to Islam was sentenced Sunday to a year in prison. The convert, a woman from Beersheva, had taken advantage of her position as an inspector at a security checkpoint to allow her Arab husband to slip into Israel illegally.

According to the charge sheet, the woman had been employed at the Meitar checkpoint, between Hebron and Beersheva, and allowed her husband, a resident of the Dehaishe refugee camp, and his relatives, to cross into Israel without permits. Moreover, she gave her husband her personal weapon.

In the verdict, Beersheva Magistrate’s Court Judge Tali Chaimovitch noted that the woman had been convicted of five offenses, including breach of trust.

“We are talking about deeds that jeopardize the security of the state and its residents,” the judge stressed, handing down a one-year prison sentence with half a year suspended.

There have been a number of such cases in the past, Yad L’Achim officials point out. In one, Muhammad Inbawai of Shuafat was sentenced to more than two years for stealing an M-16 from a female Jewish soldier with whom he had been involved in a relationship.

Yad L’Achim is alerting the country’s leadership that the problem of assimilation and intermarriage has a security as well as a spiritual component. As such, it represents an existential threat of the highest order.
